Thigh-length extensions by Cardi B gave a vintage ’90s hairstyle a modern update.

In her role as presenter of the American Music Awards the previous year, Cardi B led us through the night in a variety of ostentatious costumes while sporting a blunt mullet that cascaded beyond her bum, long nude nails, and a dramatic neutral cut crease. The Bronx-born rapper returned to the AMAs stage this year with hair that was still long but done in a spikey half-updo with a feigned side bang.
At the awards show on November 20, Cardi B and Memphis rapper Glorilla performed “Tomorrow 2.” Cardi B’s costume was baby blue, while Glorilla’s was bright yellow. Both had sleek jet-black hair that dropped to their knees. Cardi B’s half-updo was a throwback to the 1990s, while Glorilla’s hair was simply parted on the side with slicked baby hairs.
Cardi’s front hair was slicked over her forehead by hairstylist Tokyo Stylez, who has worked closely with the rapper for years, to imitate a side bang. The ends of her half-ponytail, which was made up of numerous parts of her jet-black hair, protruded over her head. Stylez used a GHD Curve Soft Curl Iron to delicately curl the tips of the hairpieces.

If you look closely, you can see the tightly twisted strands of hair encircling one another at the base of the updo. Her dark hair was so lustrous that it shone more brightly than the icicle chain around her neck. Stylez used the Platinum+ Styler from GHD to straighten the hair.
In the 1990s, this edgy haircut was combined with a short cut as frequently as peanut butter and jelly, so we appreciate that Cardi B opted for inches on inches for the American Music Awards.
