A$AP Rocky appears to have a score to settle with Drake, judging by his latest single, “HIGHJACK.” With the album Don’t Be Dumb on the horizon, DJ Kast One fueled speculation on Hot 97, suggesting that Rocky’s new material takes aim at Drizzy. While fans might have to wait until August 30 for the full album, “HIGHJACK” seems to offer a sneak peek.
In the track, Rocky’s lyrics seem pointedly critical: “These n*gas want my wife bad, the people want my next track. The coppers want my black as, f*cked up, but it’s like that.” The mention of Rihanna, who has connections to both Rocky and Drake, adds fuel to the fire, especially considering Drake’s previous references to Ri in his own diss tracks.
The interpolation of Future’s “Like That” might be the most telling sign. Rocky’s repeated use of “like that” echoes the instrumental from Future and Metro Boomin’s diss track aimed at Drake, with lines such as, “Pull up to the trenches, all my jewelry, yeah, I’m like that.” This could be a subtle jab at Drake, whose nickname, “The Boy,” could be the target of Rocky’s critique.
In addition to Rocky’s potential barbs, JPEGMAFIA’s recent album I LAY DOWN MY LIFE FOR YOU also included harsh words for Drake, including references to serious allegations. However, Rocky’s approach, if intentional, seems more restrained by comparison. Fans will need to keep an ear out for the rest of Don’t Be Dumb to see if Rocky’s diss game heats up further.
