In her speech, Kate Winslet discussed the challenges she encountered in the beginning of her career, such as being selected for “fat girl” roles and facing public scrutiny for her weight.
In a recent interview, Kate Winslet discussed the challenges she encountered as a budding actress, including the continual media attention her weight received and the selection of “fat girl” roles. The Academy Award winner admitted that her agent would occasionally receive calls from people questioning her about her weight. She also said it was “challenging” to deal with the “very negative” expectations that women in show business must endure. The actor added that it is “heartwarming” to observe the transformation and that the dynamics are altering right now.
Kate Winslet claims that early in her career, she was urged to accept “fat girl” roles.
The Titanic actor recalled receiving calls asking, “How’s her weight?” when he was younger in an interview with The Sunday Times. No, I’m not kidding. The flipping News of the World being delivered on my porch was difficult enough, but it is no longer sufficient, she continued. It’s not true to say that “today’s news is tomorrow’s fish and chip paper.”
She added that there can be “very harsh” industry norms for women. A young, defenceless individual cannot handle the level of scrutiny that people are subjected to. But there are significant changes happening in the film industry, said Kate.
After working in the film industry for decades, Kate admitted that she is quite selective when choosing roles and that she doesn’t want to “be that actress who jerks their face and has a physique that jiggles.” In order to take “each decision with integrity,” she said she aims for moments where she may let herself be as true to the truth as possible.
There were attempts to airbrush Kate’s tummy in the acclaimed HBO series Mare of Easttown, she admitted in an interview with The New York Times last year. Don’t you dare, Winslet reacted when the director promised to remove a “bulgy chunk of tummy” from a scene.
In terms of her professional life, Kate is working on the eagerly anticipated Avatar: The Way of Water with her Titanic director James Cameron. On December 16, 2022, the film is expected to be released and also features Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, and Stephen Lang in key roles.
